An education declaration!

The first action project in our humanities course, A nation's argument has put us all in a constant state of contemplation. For the past few weeks leading up to this project, we've looked at the declaration of independence to see how it was composed as well as its content. We also had an in-house field experience with Ben Blair, a principal from a Montessori school. This FE was important for this action project as well as our class because it got us thinking further about education in depth. Some questions that were raised were about the difference between traditional and progressive educational institutions as well as what these progressive schools respect from their students that traditional public schools don't. For this AP we were tasked with creating our own declaration about education and giving resources and goals for a curriculum that adapts to whatever you chose. The guiding question for the project was What things about education should change or be assisted? My declaration was on the fact that a lot of students coming out of high school and/or college, tend to be lost because the information they learned in school barely pertains to what they need to survive as an adult in the world we live in. Here's what I had to say.

A lot of students coming out of high school and/or college, tend to be lost because the information they learned in school barely pertains to what they need to survive as an adult in the world we live in. As a junior in high school, this hits close to home. I'm constantly worried that what I learn in school will not help me at all when I proceed to survive as an adult. Either way, I'm glad that I'm apart of a school that allows us to express these issues in the form of a final project. It always turns out to be both challenging and fun, while keeping it professional.
